Summary

JOB SUMMARY:

The Manager RN Clinical oversees the Medsurg Medical 4S unit at Carroll Hospital. The Nurse Manager is a supportive role to the unit Director and staff. This role has 24/7 accountability with a focus on improving and sustaining positive patient outcomes, the patient experience, facilitating patient throughput, staff engagement, operations, fiscal and change management. In addition, it will be a requirement for this individual to maintain basic nursing skills as required by specialty. The individual must demonstrate basic competence in clinical, ethical and legal aspects surrounding the provision of patient care. In the absence of the Director, the Nurse Manager will assume full oversight and responsibilities for their assigned unit.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Collaborates with nursing and other organizational leaders on initiatives to achieve and sustain HCAHPS and NRC results that reflect the patient experience. Ensure Associates are performing all tasks that result in a positive patient experience. Monitor team to ensure purposeful hourly care rounds and bedside shift report in a manner consistent with achieving the goals. In collaboration with the nurse manager, purposeful round on patients ensuring patient needs and expectations are met. Address and identify patient/family concerns in a timely manner. Review survey comments with team identifying strengths and opportunities for improvement. Complete daily rounding with purpose.

Clinical Management:

Maintains competent in specialty area. Demonstrates proficiency in clinical/ethical/legal aspects surrounding the provision of patient care. Assist with developing and setting strategic target plans for unit outcomes and other clinical initiatives. Support the Director by creating sustainable work process that are consistent with patient centered care. Assume full responsibility of unit functions in the absence of the Director. Ensure appropriate utilization of resources and skill mix to meet patients care needs on unit. Support professional development and ensures that team behaviors and practices are aligned with shared governance expectations including consistent committee involvement.

Patient Throughput:

Ensure timely patient throughput by identifying and removing barriers that prevent the facilitation of patient placements. In collaboration with the Director/Exec Director and Shift Coordinator, facilitates patient throughput. Ensure Associates call and receive Handoff Report in a timely manner, identify and address gaps that prohibit timely bed placement. Assist team with barriers and escalate to Director when unable to facilitate timely patient movement. Collaborate with the Shift Coordinator and Clinical Support Staff to avoid surge capacity. Collaborate with Team and other departments during surge capacity alerts to facilitate patient placement. Based on acuity, staffing and throughput needs, steps in as Charge Nurse.

Engagement:

Work collaboratively with the Director to build positive, productive working relationships with the team ensuring engagement and commitment to the organizational strategic plan. Recognize high and solid performers and develop strategies to improve and stabilize unit retention. Assist with analyzing engagement to identify areas of opportunity, develop corrective plans of action in conjunction with the nurse manager and team to implement and monitor for desired and sustained improvement. Models and develops high performing team attributes and collaboration. Engage staff on all shifts enhancing active participation on committees that improve and sustain outcomes. Develops strategies for reward, recognition and improvement.

Clinical Quality Outcomes:

Assist with ensuring successful unit and hospital clinical performance. Ability to identify gaps to improve and sustain clinical performance. Support quality initiatives on the unit through assessment, problem identification, data collection, change implementation and monitor outcomes. Support the advancement and integration of EBP (Evidenced Based Practice) into the workplace. Ensure behaviors and clinical practice are aligned with the desired outcomes. Conduct random chart audits and direct observation of clinical practice standards. Facilitate various unit based committee/councils utilizing EBP that result in measured improved outcomes. In collaboration with the nurse manager, based on EBP, works with the TLC to design and implement a plan for unit process improvements. Utilizing EBP, contributes to the development/revision of policy, procedures and practice standards that guide and support the delivery of patient care services.

Competencies:

Demonstrates knowledge and clinical competence by direct involvement in the nursing process or by planning and guiding care with other team members as necessary. Monitors clinical competence of staff members and evaluates compliance of the nursing process as evidenced by documentation and practice in concert with JCAHO standards. Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and the skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served. Ability to interpret data about the patient status in order to identify each patient's age specific needs and provide the care needed by the patient group.

Staffing/Scheduling:

Coordinates/prepares work schedules for Associates in a timely manner. Reviews staffing daily for accuracy and makes appropriate adjustments. Demonstrates flexibility in schedule to meet the needs of unit. Facilitates and documents monthly team meetings with the director.

Human Resources:

Works with HR to use the Just Culture principles in consistent, fair and equitable manner to investigate adverse events, provide follow-up, take appropriate corrective action, identify trends and report to unit leadership and Quality Risk Management. Interviews and hires associates in collaboration with appropriate team members. Identify gaps and provide immediate feedback and coaching as appropriate. Assist the Director with performance management. Hardwires unit excellence by ensuring that agreed upon strategies are consistently performed by team. Meet with Associates 1:1 to provide and solicit feedback on opportunities for improvement.

Fiscal Management:

Assist Director with the preparation and management of unit operations/capital budget.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

Associate's degree in Nursing (ADN) required; Bachelor's or Master's degree in Nursing (BSN or MSN) preferred

National cert in area of specialty preferred

3-5 years Progressive nursing management experience preferred

ACLS - Advanced Cardiac Life Support

American Heart Association CPR (BLS)

Registered Nurse (RN) License
